Riding an Elevator
1. When calling the elevator, push the button and wait.
2. When the elevator door opens, please step to the side of the doorway and let other people exit first before entering. NEVER linger on door tracks!
3. After boarding the elevator, push your desired floor number and face forward along with other people during the ride.
4. When the elevator stops at your floor, exit the elevator car right away when the door opens. Please be extra cautious as the elevator car may not be leveled at the floor properly.
5. When you hold the door for people to enter or exit the elevator, use the "DOOR OPEN" button.
6. Never jump or horseplay around in the elevator cab, it can render the elevator useless for other people. Tampering with the emergency devices (alarm, stop switch, phone) is strictly prohibited unless if it's a real emergency.
7. NEVER EVER pull on the closing doors! This can cause SERIOUS PROBLEMS to others as it can break down depending on what you're doing.
8. Playing around in the elevator is not allowed. That includes pounding on the buttons, joyriding, switching on different modes, etc. If someone in the building who works there caught you doing that, you could be thrown out of the facility and possibly press charges on you for trespassing.

Elevator Equipment Safety
1. Elevator Machine Room: Never enter an elevator machine room without permission from either elevator technicians or a building owner. You could get killed or seriously injured by moving parts. If someone in the building you know who controls the elevator escorts you in, DO NOT GET CLOSE OR TOUCH ANYTHING! They are high voltage machinery. Building owners and elevator technicians would ask you the same exact thing I just mentioned above.
2. Drop Keys/Door Keys/Hoistway Access Keys: NEVER play with drop keys! Especially WITHOUT an elevator technician present. Those tools can get you or others killed if they are misused. If you really WANT to see an elevator shaft, have ONLY an elevator technician shut one elevator car off and unlock the hoistway doors for you, NOT A BUILDING OWNER! Building owners may not know the dangers of elevator shafts than we do. If an elevator technician does give you a hoistway access door key as a gift (Christmas, birthday, etc.), they MUST remain at home. Remember, drop keys meant to be used by elevator technicians, maintenance workers, and/or fire department members ONLY.
3. Elevator Shaft: Elevator shafts are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!!!! You can get crushed by the platform or counterweight and/or fall inside the hoistway resulting death or injury depending on the situation. If you happen to look inside of an elevator shaft (cartop station, hoistway access, pit, etc.), please stay behind the door tracks on the landing. DO NOT attempt to step inside the hoistway access unless instructed by an elevator technician. That said, if you happen to ride on top of an elevator car, please stay at a certain spot where an elevator technician instructs you. DO NOT get close to the edge of the platform itself as it can lead you falling down the shaft to your death!
4. Stuck In An Elevator: When you get stuck in an elevator, never escape out without a professionally trained assistance. PLEASE REMAIN CALM! Use the alarm button or call for help with any of those devices attached on the elevator panel. And also use the stop switch if necessary.
5. Elevators With Manual Doors: If you're on an elevator that has manual doors (like gated elevators, freight elevators, etc.), always be sure to close the doors completely before you leave unless instructed. Failure to do so can lead it inaccessible for other people and they could have to chase to different floors to find it. When operating the gate, use the handle. NOT the scissor parts! You could get your hands crushed (esp. when gate is moving automatically).

Elevator Keys
Owning elevator keys are completely legal, but using them unauthorized is strictly forbidden. It can be considered a criminal depending on what you're doing. Turning off a fan or light is considered tampering. If a building owner finds out, you could get kicked out of the facility and be charged for trespassing because you're doing something to their elevator that nobody gave you permission to do so. Now accessing a restricted floor is considered breaking and entering and your key could be considered a BURGLARY TOOL! That can put you in jail if an unidentified person caught you. The only time it's acceptable to use elevator key is when someone who owns the elevator that authorizes you to do so. If that happens, you can do any special modes like fire service or independent service, ONLY if the building owner gives you PERMISSION! And the second acceptable place to use elevator keys is if you have an elevator panel in your house, you can play with it all you want, like hooking up to a light, etc.
Riding a Service or Freight Elevator
Legally, you have to be at least 18 years old to operate a freight elevator. If you really want to see a service or freight elevator, have someone you know that works in the building escort you on. If you get busted for riding a non-public elevator, you could be escorted off the property. The only acceptable places to ride those kinds of elevators are mostly in publicly owned universities, convention centers, city-owned offices, ballparks/stadiums, and only few hotels.
